Property Tax Exemptions

Veterans property tax exemptions are not automatic. You must file an application with your local assessor’s office to receive any exemption. Rules, eligibility, and exemption amounts vary by state law and by municipality (town, village, city, or school district) and are subject to change at any time. Always verify directly with your local assessor before relying on this information.


New York State Veterans Property Tax Exemptions

Under New York State law, veterans may qualify for the following exemptions. Municipalities (towns, villages, cities, and school districts) may choose to adopt one or more of these.

Eligible Funds Exemption (RPTL § 458)
  • Partial exemption for property purchased with money received from veteran benefits (bonus, insurance, pension, etc.).
  • Must apply with proof of funds used.
  • Limited scope and not widely adopted today.

Alternative Veterans Exemption (RPTL § 458-a)
  • Provides a percentage reduction in assessed value for wartime service.
  • Additional reductions may apply for combat and service-connected disability.
  • Only available if your municipality has adopted it.

Cold War Veterans Exemption (RPTL § 458-b)
  • For veterans who served during the Cold War (Sept 2, 1945 – Dec 26, 1991).
  • Reduces assessed value of residential property.
  • Only available if adopted by your municipality; typically 10-year benefit, renewable in some cases.

Westchester County Veterans Property Tax Exemptions

Westchester County has adopted veterans exemptions consistent with New York State law. See Chapter 473 of the County Code for details.

How to Apply
  • File the initial exemption application (Form RP-458-a, RP-458-b, or RP-458) with your town/village/city assessor.
  • Provide proof of veteran status (DD-214, VA award letter, etc.), proof of residency, and proof of property ownership.
  • Deadlines: Often March 1 or May 1, but confirm with your local assessor.
  • Once accepted, exemptions typically renew automatically unless your status changes.

Because there are over 40 municipalities in Westchester, you must check with your own assessor’s office for exact eligibility, rates and deadlines.
