Veterans who already use the VA Healthcare System and have older versions of the VA Healthcare Identification Card are required to update their card. The Department of Veterans Affairs has mandated this update.
The new cards eliminate sensitive identifying information such as Social Security number and date of birth that are considered an unwarranted risk for veterans receiving health care services. Veterans who have never used the VA for medical benefits must bring a copy of their (DD-214) separation papers.
